Jim Guffey, executive director of South Hills Interfaith Ministries, reassured her that 350 volunteers were, indeed, there Saturday to help build a new playground at Whitehall Borough’s Wallace Park.

Ms. Brown is a project manager for KaBOOM!, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit group that coordinates the construction of playgrounds nationally. Organizers had expected somewhat fewer participants in Whitehall.
